SPIRITUAL GIFTS: SHEPARD/PASTOR

Our desire is that every Christ-follower is an active member of a local church and to know what spiritual gifts God has given them for building up the church and the common good. Once you have an idea of how God has gifted you with unique manifestations of the Spirit, use the following next-step guide to help you develop and deploy your gifts as good stewards of God’s varied grace.

SHEPARD/PASTOR

The gift of shepherd/pastor is the divine enablement to assume long-term responsibility to nurture, care for, and guide people toward ongoing spiritual maturity and becoming like Christ. Ephesians 4:11-14; John 10:1-18; 1 Peter 5:1-3; 1 Timothy 3:1-7

  • Saturate yourself in the truth of Scripture as your main training. A shepherd's primary tool and weapon is the word of God.

  • Do the “Grounded Course”, our intermediate theology course.

  • Check out all the Bible Project Read Scripture videos to give yourself a helpful, overarching Biblical Theological framework of how the whole Bible fits together as a unified story that leads to Jesus.

HOW TO DEVELOP:

RECOMMENDED BOOKS:

“Instruments in the Redeemer’s Hands” by Paul Tripp

“Your Gift: Shepherding” by Douglas Porter

“How People Change” by Paul Tripp

  • Let your Life Group Leader know as an obvious first step would be to get trained and put your hand up as a life group leader.

  • Don't wait for an appointment. Be a brother and a sister in the faith to someone right where you are. Actively and intentionally move towards someone in your life group whom you could shepherd towards Christ and tell your leader that you'd like to help shoulder the pastoral responsibility.
